How to get the recipe from an Instagram reel or TikTok

You're cooking along with flour on your hands, and the reel has looped past the amounts again. So you wipe your hands, replay it and lose your place.

Now the cook's spoken steps sit beside the reel as text you can keep and follow at your own pace. Reelread is a Chrome extension that turns what's said in a cooking reel into text you can copy: free for 7 a day, Complete $11 once.

Free: unlimited transcripts for your first 5 days, then 7 a day. Reelread Complete: lifetime access for $11 including tax, paid once, sold by Dodo Payments, our Merchant of Record.

How do I get the recipe from a cooking reel?

Open the reel on your computer, click the Reelread icon and press Transcribe. The reel plays once, and the steps the cook says arrive as text you can keep.

  1. Open the reel on instagram.com or tiktok.com in Chrome or Microsoft Edge on your computer.
  2. Click the Reelread icon, then press Transcribe. The reel restarts and plays once with its sound on.
  3. When the text appears, fix any ingredient or amount it misheard, then copy it, or star the reel into a Recipes nest in Saved.

A cooking reel's spoken steps as text in Reelread: boil water with fresh ginger and two cardamom pods, add the tea, then the milkA chai reel we made ourselves, as text in Reelread.

When the cook counts the steps out loud, Reelread lists them, one per line. It works for recipes the cook talks you through: a one-pan pasta, a smoothie, a weeknight curry or a cup of masala chai.

What can't it do?

It writes down what's said, so amounts that only appear as text on the video won't be in the transcript; if the cook wrote the recipe under the reel, copy it from there. It can also mishear names, slang and mixed languages, so check amounts against the reel before you cook.
